Posted at 9:23 am on May 22, 2015

You’ve spent hours slaving over your latest blog post. It’s chock full of information that you know is going to help your readers. You’ve optimised for SEO, added fun pictures, and now you’re ready to share it with the world. You hit publish and then… crickets. Nobody is coming to read your content. As writers, we like to focus on our work, but as content marketers, we need to spend just as much time marketing our pieces as we do writing them. In this article, we’re going to look at ways you can promote content on a budget.

If you’re working with a small team and a small budget you may be wondering how on earth you can promote content on a budget. Here are a few ways you can get more people to read your content without spending a dime:

 1. Use your existing resources

Do you have friends and family that love reading your work? Send them your latest post and ask them to share it with their friends and on their social media pages if they like it. If you already have a mailing list set up, you should send them your new blog posts as well –  they already like what you’re doing! If you have partners in your industry, sending them your pieces to ask for feedback can be a great way to reach a wider audience. It can also help revise your pieces and make them better.  Making your piece stronger always makes it easier to promote content on a budget.

2. Build your current networks

While creating regular blog content is an important part of any content marketing plan, using your content to build your mailing list is equally important. Create a free e-book, checklist, or course that your fans can access in exchange for an email address. Now that you’ve got them hooked on your work they’ll be excited to read your new blog posts!

3. Promote on social media

Post each new blog article on social media several times a week. It’s easy for content to get lost on social so don’t be afraid to share the same piece more than once! If you’ve worked on creating connections on social media and sharing other people’s work, they’ll be happy to return the favor!

It can sometimes feel like we’re all drowning in a sea of content online and there’s no way to get your piece in front of the right pair of eyes. But, if you work on building your existing networks, growing your mailing list, and increasing your social media presence you’ll see an increase in people reading your content and getting interested in what you have to offer!
